The Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism by Robert Murphy |
Participating in the economy is a part of everyday life; yet much of what is commonly accepted as economic fact is wrong. Keynesian schoolteachers and the liberal media have filled the world with politically correct errors that myth-busting professor Robert Murphy sets straight. Murphy explains hot topics like outsourcing (why it's good for Americans) and zoning restrictions (why they're not). Just like the other books in the P.I.G. series, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism pulls no punches. Murphy defends the free market on such sensitive issues as safety regulations, racial discrimination, and child-labor laws, all in a breezy manner that is anything but textbook. From rent control to golden parachutes to where money came from in the first place, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Capitalism sets the record straight on everything you thought you knew about economics. Never Eat Alone And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time by Keith Ferrazzi |
The youngest partner in Deloitte Consulting's history and founder of the consulting company Ferrazzi Greenlight, the author quickly aims in this useful volume to distinguish his networking techniques from generic handshakes and business cards tossed like confetti. At conferences, Ferrazzi practices what he calls the "deep bump" - a "fast and meaningful" slice of intimacy that reveals his uniqueness to interlocutors and quickly forges the kind of emotional connection through which trust, and lots of business, can soon follow. That bump distinguishes this book from so many others that stress networking; writing with 1 Fortune Small Business editor Raz, Ferrazzi creates a real relationship with readers. Ferrazzi may overstate his case somewhat when he says, "People who instinctively establish a strong network of relationships have always created great businesses," but his clear and well-articulated steps for getting access, getting close and staying close make for a substantial leg up. Each of 31 short chapters highlights a specific technique or concept, from "Warming the Cold Call" and "Managing the Gatekeeper" to following up, making small talk, "pinging" (or sending "quick, casual" greetings) and defining oneself to the point where one's missives become "the e-mail you always read because of who it's from." In addition to variations on the theme of hard work, Ferrazzi offers counterintuitive perspectives that ring true: "vulnerability... is one of the most underappreciated assets in business today"; "too many people confuse secrecy with importance." No one will confuse this book with its competitors. This title counts as a 2 title check-out. | Type: Audio CD (10) Running Time: 11hrs Status: Available Title-ID: TB1275 |

The Future for Investors Why The Tried and The True Triumph Over the Bold and The New by Jeremy Siegel |

He is a buy-and-hold kind of guy who predicts that an unprecedented wave of discovery and innovation will fuel economic growth in the U.S. and provide superior returns for investors who are patient. He looks at a broad array of trends and influences occurring across the globe, including demographics and shifts in labor, manufacturing capacity, and capital. How to Grow When Markets Don't by Adrian Slywotzky and Richard Wise |
In this shrewdly titled volume for today's tough economy, global strategy consultants Slywotsky (The Art of Profitability) and Wise analyze companies in mature markets that have managed to achieve significant growth without venturing outside their industry, manipulating their financial statements or acquiring dot-coms. Their chief insight is that established companies with experience in their field have, aside from their core business, a wealth of hidden assets-customer contacts, technical expertise, efficient business models-that they can exploit to grow new businesses. Take John Deere, which studied the growth in home ownership (and consequently in the residential landscaping market) and decided to graft its trusted brand name and expertise in agricultural equipment onto a significant growth market. Clarke American took an apparently waning business-check printing-and morphed it into a customer services firm for large banks. By building on intangible assets like brand recognition, knowledge of the customer and distribution channels, these companies transformed themselves into growth centers for new products and services. The authors gloss over many of the problems that hamper blue chip companies seeking growth, however-e.g., market attrition, declining cash flow, recalcitrant middle managers and stodgy tradition-and fail to note that many of the corporations they cite here fall into current growth industries like personal banking, health care and home ownership. Nevertheless, the book does take an imaginative look at the possibilities open to mature companies looking to rejuvenate themselves. | Type: Audio CD (3) Running Time: 3hrs Status: Available Title-ID: TB1239 |

Power Ambition Glory The Stunning Parallels Between Great Leaders of the Ancient World and Today...and the Lessons You Can Learn by Steve Forbes & John Prevas |
Forbes magazine's editor and CEO collaborates with classical scholar Prevas to examine the lives of the ancient world's greatest leaders, including Julius Caesar, Hannibal and Alexander the Great, and the lessons they have for today's business people. Interspersed throughout are 20th- and 21st-century examples of leaders whose careers parallel those of the ancient leaders, men like Alfred Sloan, who, like Augustus consolidating the Roman Empire, transformed the motley collection of automobile companies that was General Motors in the early 1920s into the world's largest corporation. Unfortunately, the historical studies rest uneasily alongside the contemporary business cases, which are often tenuously related to the ancient stories. Worse, the entire work rests on the unsubstantiated claim that businesses are like military empires, and the lessons drawn are often banal; for example, from the story of Hannibal's daring winter march over the Alps to take the Romans by surprise, the authors suggest we should think outside the box, respond to attacks and pay attention to detail. Winning the Loser's Game Timeless Strategies for Successful Investing by Charles D. Ellis |
The key points of the title are that you need to establish your long-term investment objectives in writing, and with the expert advice of professionals, determine a well-reasoned and realistic set of investment plans that can help you achieve your objectives. You should set your asset mix at the highest ratio of equities you can afford financially and emotionally for the long-term. However you do this, don't try to beat the market. That's a loser's game. Ellis emphasizes not making mistakes, not losing money relative to the market, staying in the market, and realizing that your real problem is beating inflation rather than the market. In general, doing less will be doing more. Avoid speculations, shifting funds continuously, and paying too much attention to near-term performance. | Type: Audio CD (4) Running Time: 4h30m Status: Available Title-ID: TB1218 |
Basic Economics A Citizen's Guide to the Economy, Second Edition by Thomas Sowell |

Syndicated columnist Sowell (economics, Hoover Inst.) is the author of 31 books and monographs on a broad range of topics, including race, culture, education, social policy, philosophy, and economics. Along the way, he explains exactly what economics is and what its guiding principles are. Sowell covers a broad range of topics, from scarcity, the balance of trade, and price controls to minimum-wage laws, competition, profits and losses, and the role of government. Intended as a primer for the citizen not trained in the basics of economic theory, this book is flawed only in a somewhat confusing organization that leads to repetition. Masters of Enterprise How the Titans of American Business Shaped the U.S. Economy by H.W. Brands |
Brands is a very entertaining professor who thoroughly understands and enjoys his material. He's also sensitive to the larger issues raised by these stories of entrepreneurs. Oddly enough, something more than money explains their motivation. While American business is based on the dynamic of the individual, self-made entrpreneur, the irony is that they are motivated by a pre-capitalist sense of calling and perfectionism. They are not the profit-maximizers hypothesized by capitalist economists. And Brands touches on the supreme irony of America, which consists of the tension between all-men-are-created-equal ethic of the Declaration of Independence and constitutional political system and the inequality-of-wealth-and-talent ethic of the capitalist business system. Cynics would say that the some-men-are-more-equal-than-others ethic of the economic system trumps and subverts the equality-based ethic of the political system. Brands would probably say that the empowerment and freedom of the individual can only be preserved via the sanctity of private property. The sketches of the entrepreneurs are highly entertaining and thought-provoking. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins |
John Perkins was an economic hit man. His job was to convince countries that are strategically important to the United States from Indonesia to Panama to accept enormous loans for infrastructure development and to make sure that the lucrative projects were contracted to U.S. corporations, such as Halliburton and Bechtel. Saddled with huge debts, these countries came under the control of the U.S. government, World Bank, and other U.S.-dominated aid agencies that acted like loan sharks, dictating repayment terms and bullying foreign governments into submission. In Just 18 Months, Nicolas Darvas Turned $25,000 into Over $2 Million... This is How He Did It... ...and How You Can Do it Too! With just fifty pounds sterling to his name, at the age of 23, Nicolas Darvas fled his native Hungary using a forged exit visa, to escape the Nazis. A dancer by trade, he toured nightclubs and other venues, making a living as a performer. While on tour in 1952, a Toronto nightclub offered Darvas $3000 worth of stock in a Canadian mining company, instead of his normal cash payment. He accepted the offer, and within two months, made an $8000 profit. When this happened, Darvas became very interested in the stock market. Seeing the potential for easy money in the stock market, but realizing that his initial success was based on luck, over the next several years, Darvas became committed to conquering Wall Street. He read as much as he possibly could about the stock market. He analyzed company balance sheets, studied analyst forecasts, and read dozens of investment newsletters. This book is the result of that study, including how Darvas used his system to take a $25,000 investment and turn it into a $2.25 million fortune in just 18 months. Nicolas Darvas wasn't a professional stock trader. He was a dancer. Yet, his unique approach to stock trading, which allowed him to make money regardless of whether the market rose or fell, enabled him to make a fortune. Will this system work for you? Yes! Unlike most stock trading systems, Darvas' unique strategies work, regardless of the economy or other market conditions. Selling the Invisible A Field Guide to Modern Marketing by Harry Beckwith |
The transformation from a manufacturing-based economy to one that's all about service has been well documented. Today it's estimated that nearly 75 percent of Americans work in the service sector. Instead of producing tangibles--automobiles, clothes, and tools--more and more of us are in the business of providing intangibles--health care, entertainment, tourism, legal services, and so on. However, according to Harry Beckwith, most of these intangibles are still being marketed like products were 20 years ago. In Selling the Invisible, Beckwith argues that what consumers are primarily interested in today are not features, but relationships. Even companies who think that they sell only tangible products should rethink their approach to product development and marketing and sales. For example, when a customer buys a Saturn automobile, what they're really buying is not the car, but the way that Saturn does business. Beckwith provides an excellent forum for thinking differently about the nature of services and how they can be effectively marketed. If you're at all involved in marketing or sales, then Selling the Invisible is definitely worth a look. | Type: Audio CD (2) Running Time: 3 hrs Status: Available Title-ID: TB1179 |
The Undercover Economist Exposing Why the Rich Are Rich, the Poor Are Poor-And Why You Can Never Buy a Decent Used Car by Tim Harford |
An economist's version of The Way Things Work, this engaging volume is part field guide to economics and part expose of the economic principles lurking behind daily events, explaining everything from traffic jams to high coffee prices. The Undercover Economist is for anyone who's wondered why the gap between rich and poor nations is so great, or why they can't seem to find a decent second-hand car, or how to outwit Starbucks. This title offers the hidden story behind these and other questions, as economist Tim Harford ranges from Africa, Asia, Europe, and of course the United States to reveal how supermarkets, airlines, and coffee chains--to name just a few--are vacuuming money from our wallets. Harford punctures the myths surrounding some of today's biggest controversies, including the high cost of health-care; he reveals why certain environmental laws can put a smile on a landlord's face; and he explains why some industries can have high profits for innocent reasons, while in other industries something sinister is going on. Covering an array of economic concepts including scarce resources, market power, efficiency, price gouging, market failure, inside information, and game theory, Harford sheds light on how these forces shape our day-to-day lives, often without our knowing it. Showing us the world through the eyes of an economist, Tim Harford reveals that everyday events are intricate games of negotiations, contests of strength, and battles of wits. With a light touch and sly wit, The Undercover Economist turns "the dismal science" into a true delight. Freakonomics A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner |
Economics is not widely considered to be one of the sexier sciences. The annual Nobel Prize winner in that field never receives as much publicity as his or her compatriots in peace, literature, or physics. But if such slights are based on the notion that economics is dull, or that economists are concerned only with finance itself, Steven D. Levitt will change some minds. In 1 Freakonomics (written with Stephen J. Dubner), Levitt argues that many apparent mysteries of everyday life don't need to be so mysterious: they could be illuminated and made even more fascinating by asking the right questions and drawing connections. For example, Levitt traces the drop in violent crime rates to a drop in violent criminals and, digging further, to the Roe v. Wade decision that preempted the existence of some people who would be born to poverty and hardship. Elsewhere, by analyzing data gathered from inner-city Chicago drug-dealing gangs, Levitt outlines a corporate structure much like McDonald's, where the top bosses make great money while scores of underlings make something below minimum wage. And in a section that may alarm or relieve worried parents, Levitt argues that parenting methods don't really matter much and that a backyard swimming pool is much more dangerous than a gun. These enlightening chapters are separated by effusive passages from Dubner's 2003 profile of Levitt in 1 The New York Times Magazine, which led to the book being written. 1,000 Dollars & an Idea by Sam Wyly |
Country boy makes good in this down-home tale of self-made multimillionaire Wyly. In his humble post-Depression Louisiana roots, Wyly learned his first business lessons from football strategy, his father's tiny newspaper business and his mother's bargaining skills. A lucky meeting propelled him to the University of Michigan's Business School and his first corporate job at IBM, where he had to work fast to keep from succumbing to culture shock as he discovered there ain't no Bubbas in Michigan. Energetic and restless, he soon left IBM for Honeywell and then created his own technology companies, rescuing failing businesses, founding Green Mountain Energy and devoting himself to environmentalism. Citing Sam Walton as a hero and Ross Perot as a personal friend, Wyly stresses the power and privilege of self-creation and speaks honestly about what he's learned: that failure is crucial to achieving success, independent thought is imperative, luck serendipitous and power useless unless it is wielded for good. The Return of Depression Economics and the Crisis of 2008 by Paul Krugman |
In this new, greatly updated edition of 1 The Return of Depression Economics, Paul shows how the failure of regulation to keep pace with an increasingly out-of-control financial system set the United States, and the world as a whole, up for the greatest financial crisis since the 1930s. He also lays out the steps that must be taken to contain the crisis, and turn around a world economy sliding into a deep recession. Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham & Donald Clifton |
Effectively managing personnel--as well as one's own behavior--is an extraordinarily complex task that, not surprisingly, has been the subject of countless books touting what each claims is the true path to success. That said, Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton's 1 Now, Discover Your Strengths does indeed propose a unique approach: focusing on enhancing people's strengths rather than eliminating their weaknesses. Following up on the coauthors' popular previous book, 11, it fully describes 34 positive personality themes the two have formulated (such as Achiever, Developer, Learner, and Maximizer) and explains how to build a "strengths-based organization" by capitalizing on the fact that such traits are already present among those within it. | Type: Audio CD (3) Running Time: 3hrs Status: Available Title-ID: TB1158 |

The Age of Turbulence Adventures in a New World by Alan Greenspan |
In the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, in his fourteenth year as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Alan Greenspan took part in a very quiet collective effort to ensure that America didn't experience an economic meltdown, taking the rest of the world with it. There was good reason to fear the worst: the stock market crash of October 1987, his first major crisis as Federal Reserve Chairman, coming just weeks after he assumed control, had come much closer than is even today generally known to freezing the financial system and triggering a genuine financial panic. But the most remarkable thing that happened to the economy after 9/11 was...nothing. What in an earlier day would have meant a crippling shock to the system was absorbed astonishingly quickly. Master Your Money Type Using Your Financial Personality to Create a Life of Wealth and Freedom by Jordan Goodman |
Consult Goodman for radical money sense. A former long-tenured 1 Money magazine reporter, he tackles the money issue endemic to Americans according to six psychological types--Strivers, Ostriches, Debt Desperadoes, Coasters, High Rollers, and Squirrels. Each profile is based on the emotional effects of money, whether that involves indifference, its use as a measure of success, or high tolerance of risk. So these psychological examinations feature strengths as well as weaknesses, initial attitudes and suggested changes, individual/couple financial snapshots and anecdotes in narrative and in sidebars, quizzes, and summaries of actions to take. Names are unusually descriptive; Debt Desperadoes are measured by the number of maxed-out credit cards, whereas Squirrels are averse to any spending no matter the reason. | Type: Audio CD (6) Running Time: 7h15m Status: Available Title-ID: TB1154 |
The Snowball Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder |

Buffett's plain-speaking suffuses the book and renders his public and private successes and failures wonderfully human and universal. Cashing in with Government Grants, Loans and Subsidies National Grant Conferences |
There are 3 major sources of government funding, Federal, State and Local which include counties, cities, towns and villages. The mistake many people make is that they might only try calling a government agency such as HUD, but HUD doesn't disperse the money in many of their programs. It goes instead to the local areas and it's the local governments that disperse the money. For example HUD has CDBG (Community Development Block Grants) money with over $4.7 billion available this year, so you would have to contact the local government to find out what CDBG funding is available in your area and what the qualifications are. Another little known fact is that 23% of the budget for the Federal and State government has to be made available to small business to compete with. The SBA (Small Business Administration) targets their funding to businesses with $5 million or less in revenues and 500 or less employees. In addition, these sources have a lot of programs which target funding for minorities, disabled people, veterans and even WOMEN. National Grants Conferences has many years of research and has taken this knowledge and all these programs and combined it together all into one place. This CD set will save you a lot of time and effort in finding and securing government money for the program that best fits your needs. Persuasion IQ The 10 Skills You Need to Get Exactly What You Want by Kurt Mortensen |
Mortensen (Maximum Influence) draws on Howard Gardner's research on multiple forms of intelligence and Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence to introduce his concept of PQ7the specialized intelligence required for the art of persuasion. While the book is primarily geared toward marketing and sales professionals, the author argues that the inability to command influence is a universal personal and professional dilemma; he makes a compelling case that teachers, social workers, parents and spouses can benefit enormously from the respect power that accompanies finely tuned people skills. Mortensen invokes great communicators from Confucius and Thoreau to corporate CEOs to present PQ's key components (the five C's of trust: character, competence, confidence, credibility and congruence) and rewards (more sales and fruitful negotiations, higher incomes, happier relationships). Sections on mirroring and other nonverbal persuasion techniques are especially fascinating, and the author's emphasis on developing self-knowledge as a crucial ingredient will inspire readers to determine their purpose and passion. Mortenson's insights are enriched by anecdotes, humorous illustrations, a persuasion IQ test and an accessible step-by-step structure. Simultaneously useful and entertaining, this book is a thought-provoking examination into developing a vital talent. The Wisdom of the CEO Global Leaders Tackle Today's Most Pressing Business Challenges by William Dauphinais, Grady Meands & Colin Price |

FitzGerald, and Michael Dell. Dell's piece on hypergrowth alone is worth the price of admission.
